kolkata: seven days after the abduction of khadim's vice chairman partho roy burman, it appears that the police have lost its 'misplaced' confidence regarding the abduction. on wednesday, the police were sceptical whether the hostage was alive or dead. for the past one week, ig, cid partha bhattacharjee confidently repeated, "we have reasons to believe that he is alive." inspector general (south bengal) prasun mukherjee, on the other hand said: "i can't comment on whether he is alive or dead till he comes back home safe and sound.
we are very worried." he also refused to comment on the view held by ig, cid. "i don't know what some one else had said." ig south bengal, however, admitted that till the time, "unfortunately there has been no breakthrough as such." he said that the investigation was on. "we all are trying our best to see him back safe and sound." at roy burman's salt lake residence, khadim's managers arup ghosh and manish chakraborty said that there was not any development to convey to the media. roy burman family sources said, "the 76 year old father of the hostage, satya prasad roy burman was not keeping well, as he was very worried for his son who reported had received two bullet injuries." police sources said chunua mian, now in police custody in connection with the case, was still being interrogated by the investigating team. chunua, from tiljela area, was arrested on suspicion of complicity with criminals responsible for the abduction of the industrialist. as inordinate delay in rescuing the businessman from the clutch of abductors increasingly endangering the life of hostage, the efficiency of state criminal investigation department is being questioned by experts. so far, its failure in handling the case of the abduction is quite apparent. the statements the cid officers came out at different point of time only added mystery to the confusion about the case that clouded sleuths. within 15 minutes of the abduction, the police came to know about it. accordingly all check-posts were sealed. the police carried out surveillance on cars. there were numerous eye-witnesses who saw the entire action. cid was taken for a ride. it took three days just to understand that eye-witnesses' accounts were conflicting and the need to arrest the local ganglord chunua alias mohammed taslim. before arrest, posing as tipper, chunua also exploited cid to get his rivals arrested. there is apparently no method in cid's investigation, a cid insider revealed. this is more because of cid's inexperience in handling such case. cid officers are little experienced how inter-state gangs operate. nor they have information of existence of gangs. the tried and tested methodology followed by up task force is cleanly missing in the process of investigation, a senior officer having expertise in handling such cases, said. but criminal experts said that cid made some basic mistakes. they even forgot to follow world-famous atalche's 10-point thumb rules which dealt with basics of investigation like what need to be done at po (place of occurrence). according to one of atalche's thumb-rules, the escape route of the criminals is very important. the identification of vehicle in which abduction was made, is another important aspect. neither cid follow the escape route nor they could identify the vehicle. almost after a week, some cid personnel were spotted checking out some garages in south and south suburban kolkata. sleuths said that it was unlikely that the hostage was whisked away to a distant place. the hostage is injured, so it is difficult and risky to carry the hostage to a distant place.
